Report on the Tanzan Shrine Experience

A Feast for the Senses: Kaiseki Lunch and Sake Tasting
Lunch at the Tounomine Kanko Hotel was an experience I’ll never forget. Sitting in a serene
mountain setting, we were treated to a Kaiseki meal that was nothing short of art on a plate.
Each dish was a celebration of local, seasonal ingredients—delicate seafood, tender grilled
meats, and regional specialties that were beautifully presented. The sake pairings elevated
the meal even further, creating a satisfying and enlightening harmonious of flavors. As I
enjoyed each bite, I felt a deep connection to the land and its culinary traditions.

Stepping Back in Time at Tanzan Shrine
Next, we visited Tanzan Shrine, a place of immense historical and spiritual significance. The
autumn leaves added a vibrant splash of color to the already tranquil surroundings, making
it feel like a scene from a classic painting. Learning about Fujiwara no Kamatari and his role
in shaping Japan’s history added a layer of depth to the experience.
The highlight here was trying Kemari, an ancient courtly sport that reminded me of a
refined version of hacky sack. It was both fun and fascinating, giving me a hands-on
connection to a pastime once enjoyed by Japan’s imperial court. For a moment, I felt like I’d
stepped into the Heian period, sharing in a piece of their leisure and tradition.

Final Thoughts
My journey through the Kaiseki lunch, sake tasting, and the exploration of Tanzan Shrine
was a deeply enriching experience that combined the best of Japanese culinary artistry,
history, and culture.
This experience left me with a deep sense of admiration for Japan’s dedication to
preserving its heritage, whether through cuisine, historical landmarks, or traditional sports.
It was a celebration of beauty, mindfulness, and legacy that will remain with me as a
treasured memory.
